Doctors are to be told to stop prescribing antibiotics for coughs, colds and sore throats because over-use of the drugs is fuelling the spread of killer hospital superbugs.Alan Johnson, the Health Secretary, says it is time to end the unnecessary use of penicillin and other commonly-prescribed pills, which cost the NHS £1.7 billion a year.

Pushy patients blamed for rise of superbugs says the Guardian

Excessive use of antibiotics caused bacteria to develop resistant strains. This was the biggest single cause of the spread of hospital-acquired infections, Johnson said. He said he was planning a public information campaign next month with posters and leaflets in GP surgeries. There would be no attempt to impose quotas on doctors' use of antibiotics, but GPs prescribing above average amounts could expect to be visited by antimicrobial pharmacists, who would give advice on prescription policy.

"Each proposal is considered on whether it is likely to have a positive effect, either directly or indirectly, on the search for Madeleine.
