Only one story this morning across all the papers as more news on the terror suspects is made available.

Terror plot hatched in British hospitals says the Independent

A suspected secret cell of foreign militants, believed to be linked to al-Qa'ida and using British hospitals as cover, are being questioned over the terrorist attacks in London and Glasgow.
Five of the eight people under arrest last night are said to be doctors. Another of those detained is the wife of one of the doctors, who is a medical assistant working for the NHS. The home of a sixth doctor is said to have been searched by police. Late last night an Australian television network reported that a suspect wanted in connection with the attacks had been arrested in Brisbane.

Six NHS doctors held over al-Qa'eda campaign is the headline in the Telegraph

In a development that will raise questions over the vetting procedures for medics from abroad, it emerged that five of the seven suspects held by British police are young Middle Eastern men employed at British hospitals.
One is Mohammed Asha, a "brilliant" neurosurgeon from Jordan. Another being questioned over both the London and Glasgow attacks is Bilal Abdulla, an Iraqi junior doctor who was a passenger in the car that rammed Glasgow airport.

Brown’s leadership rating soars in poll after terrorist attacks

Gordon Brown has got off to flying start as Prime Minister with his poll ratings as a leader and for strength soaring following his handling of the terrorist attacks.
A new Populus poll for The Times confirms the strength of the “Brown bounce”, in contrast with a decline in David Cameron’s leader rating.
Labour has gained four points to 37 per cent since early last month and the Tories are down two points at 34 per cent. The Liberal Democrats are up one point at 18 per cent and other parties down three points at 11 per cent. This is in line with two other recent polls and suggests that 14 months of a sustained Conservative lead has ended.
The Labour advance has fuelled talk of an early election, but Mr Brown has dismissed such speculation. He wants to establish his new Government and is likely to be cautious.

Meanwhile changes on the opposition benches are reported in most of the papers

Security expert and Muslim join Cameron's shadow team says the Guardian

David Cameron last night drafted a Muslim and a former intelligence chief into his shadow cabinet in a reshuffle which demoted several controversial spokesmen and showed his sensitivity to bad headlines. Sayeeda Warsi, a Conservative party vice-chairman in her 30s, becomes the first Muslim member of the shadow cabinet as new spokesman for community cohesion. Dame Pauline Neville-Jones, in her 60s, joins as shadow security minister and national security adviser to Mr Cameron in the autumn of a career dominated by service in the Foreign Office.

Maude and Willetts lose out in Cameron's reshuffle says the Indy

The losers include Francis Maude, the party chairman and a leading moderniser, who is demoted to shadowing the Cabinet Office, and David Willetts, who sparked an internal row by abandoning the Tories' support for creating more grammar schools. He loses his schools brief but will continue to speak for the party on higher education.
Hugo Swire, who suggested the Tories might re-introduce museum charges before being slapped down by Mr Cameron, pays the price for his gaffe by losing his job as shadow Culture Secretary.

Cameron puts a spy in his shadow cabinet says the Mail

In answer to Gordon Brown's attempt to bring in outsiders to build a Government of "all the talents", he appointed Britain's former spy chief Dame Pauline Neville-Jones as Shadow security minister and Muslim lawyer Sayeeda Warsi to the high-profile community cohesion brief.

Dame Pauline, a career diplomat, is hugely respected in intelligence circles.
The Oxford graduate joined the diplomatic service and held postings in Singapore, Washington, and Bonn. She went on to head the Government's Joint Intelligence Committee and became political director of the Foreign Office.

The Sun tells Gordon Brown to

Rip up the INhuman Rights Act

BRITAIN is under siege — threatened by suicide bombers and murderers who have no fear of the law or respect for human life. Just about every shopping mall and sports ground is now a target for terror.
Nuclear plants and water reservoirs are at risk of attack.
And extremists are plotting to destroy the City of London — and our economy — with a nuclear “dirty bomb”.
Yet we ask our police and intelligence services to protect and defend us with their arms tied behind their backs.
Why? Because in an act of abject surrender to the libertarian left, Labour signed up to the EU Charter of Human Rights

The Mirror tells us

LOCK DOWN

HUNDREDS of sports arenas, shopping centres, train stations and airports have been deemed high-risk terror targets as Britain braces itself for a wave of attacks by al-Qaeda fanatics.
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith warned Islamic terrorists have around 450 major sporting venues in their sights and 400 retail complexes.
But despite the threat to innocent shoppers, fans and travellers, the Home Office has refused to publicly name the sites at risk for "security reasons".

Child of hope for cancer girls reports the Times

An 11-month-old baby is living proof of a new fertility treatment that could give the chance of motherhood to thousands of young girls suffering from cancer. The technique could also help women suffering from polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) to have children with less risk.
Carine, who is healthy and developing normally, is the first baby to be conceived from an egg that was frozen after being matured in the laboratory.
Three other women in Canada are pregnant after having similar therapy. The achievement shows that it is possible to preserve fertility by freezing eggs without recourse to powerful hormonal drugs that stimulate the ovaries. While hundreds of children have been born from immature eggs that were ripened in a test tube before they were fertilised, Carine is the first to come from an artificially matured egg that was frozen and thawed.

The Telegraph reports that

Bush spares Scooter Libby from prison

President George W Bush last night spared the former White House aide Lewis "Scooter" Libby from jail, dramatically intervening in his case to commute his sentence while leaving the conviction intact. In a statement after Libby's final appeal against conviction was rejected, Mr Bush, who, up to that point, had remained silent on the issue, used his presidential power to overturn the sentence but rejected the option of a full pardon.
"I respect the jury's verdict," Mr Bush said in the statement. "But I have concluded that the prison sentence given to Mr Libby is excessive. Therefore, I am commuting the portion of Mr Libby's sentence that required him to spend 30 months in prison.

Saved from prison by Bush's favour: the White House aide who lied to a grand jury says the Guardian

Conservative commentators raged against the judge, Reggie Walton, and the prosecutor, Patrick Fitzgerald, and called on Mr Bush to act on behalf of a loyal servant. But Democrats and others yesterday accused the president of operating with double standards, protecting a convicted felon from jail because of his association with the White House

Warmth but little progress at US-Russian summit

A lobster dinner, a fishing trip and the beaming presence of George Bush senior may have improved the atmosphere between the US and Russia - but there was little sign of progress yesterday towards resolving major disagreements dividing the former superpower rivals.
Speaking after his first meeting with a foreign leader at the family compound on the rugged Maine coast, George W Bush joined with Vladimir Putin in a show of unity in dealing with Iran's alleged nuclear weapons programme.
But it is still unclear whether Moscow will back tough new sanctions sought by Washington if Iran continues to defy demands for a suspension of its uranium enrichment programme.
