LONG-SUFFERING taxpayers had £6.60 taken from them for every hour they worked last year, latest figures reveal.
Last night’s startling figure is more than £1 above what the Treasury was taking five years ago and is higher than the minimum wage.A triple whammy of soaring council tax, stamp duty and inheritance tax has helped Chancellor Gordon Brown raise the burden to its highest ever – with Middle Britain particularly badly hit. Only 354 of 90,000 police caught on camera speeding or jumping red lights last year were punished.
Last night forces were accused of double standards after it emerged that only one in 200 officers was fined or given points, compared with 84 per cent of ordinary drivers.
In a quarter of the cases the police cars had their blue lights flashing, suggesting officers were attending an emergency.
However, nearly all of the rest had the slate wiped clean by senior police, saving them from three points on their licence and a £60 fine.

A SPECIAL team of police officers will watch the latest Big Brother for racism and violence - and could even stop the show.
Housemates' behaviour is to be scrutinised by the squad who will arrest offenders, even if the programme is live.
The move, condemned last night as a waste of money and manpower, follows the racist bullying of Shilpa Shetty on Celebrity BB in January.
A police source said: "No hint of that will be tolerated. If necessary, we'll visit the studio to apprehend housemates."
