Women to receive less in divorce settlements
The balance of power in divorces tilted away from wives yesterday as a judge warned that ex-husbands could not be expected to provide women with a share of future earnings for life.
England’s reputation as the most female-friendly place for divorce was dented when a wife who did not have a job was refused £1.5 million compensation for loss of her banker husband’s future pay.
Mr Justice Charles said in the High Court that anyone given an adequate lump sum could not expect a share of future earnings.
The case before him concerned Mr and Mrs H who met at St John’s College, Oxford, in 1982 and married three years later. She gave up her job as a teacher to follow him to a posting with a bank in Tokyo, and took charge of caring for their four children, now aged 9 to 19. Mr H formed a new relationship in 2004 and left their £2.7 million marital home, which the wife will keep, after 20 years of marriage.

The Tories said they would ask parliamentary authorities if Mr Reid should record the link in the register of members' interests. He insists that he does not have to do so.
The news could prove embarrassing for such a senior Cabinet minister because of previous Treasury crackdowns on offshore tax havens.
The Daily Telegraph has found links between three former or present homes of Mr Reid's wife's family to Sterlinvestments Limited, which is registered in the British Virgin Islands.

'Britain has fallen out of love with celebrity'

Asked about the contrast between his writing and the prime minister doing Catherine Tate impersonations on Red Nose day, he replies: "I think we're moving from this period when, if you like, celebrity matters, when people have become famous for being famous. I think you can see that in other countries too - people are moving away from that to what lies behind the character and the personality."

The sunshine superstar: study reveals Vitamin D as 'wonder vitamin'
Twenty minutes' lying in the sun this weekend could provide your best chance of avoiding colds and flu, according to new research which demonstrates that vitamin D, not vitamin C, provides the most efficient protection against cold viruses.
The exceptional spring weather, which is forecast to continue into next week with a high of 24C today, will offer the best opportunity so far this year to top up D-levels that have become depleted over the winter, scientists say.
Vitamin D is created by the action of sunlight on the skin and levels in all UK residents are at their lowest at this time of year, after the long winter. Short days and cloudy skies mean 60 per cent of the British population are deficient by the start of spring.
Conservatives accused him of making "misleading" statements by claiming that he was only asked to "note" the decision to allow the sailors to sell their stories.
The Queen's Regulations for the Navy also make it clear that if serving personnel speak to the media as part of their duties the appearances will be covered by their normal pay "and no question of extra payments to individuals will arise".
Lieutenant Felix Carman wrote a 5,500-word diary for The Times, but has been stopped from handing it over.
The disclosure represents yet another policy change by the Ministry of Defence.
When the 15 captives returned from Iran, they were encouraged to sell their stories — a decision that prompted an outcry. The MoD responded by banning them from selling their stories but allowed them to speak to journalists.
The Prime Minister, in an exclusive interview with The Times, also claimed that the idea that voters could back the SNP in the Scottish election on May 3 in the belief that it would not open the door to the break-up of Britain, was “nuts”.
Mr Blair was speaking at the end of a campaigning trip to Labour heartlands in the West of Scotland, after pleading with voters in an earlier speech not to give him “a kicking one last time on my way out of the door” but to concentrate instead on the implications of electing an SNP administration in Edinburgh.

The £1m Post Offfice - but where's the post box?
Gleaming and glass-fronted, Britain's newest post office was opened with great fanfare this week.
Costing £1million and located in the heart of Exeter, it was equipped with all the latest technology.
But - as customers soon noticed to their great annoyance - there was one small thing missing ... a letterbox on the outside.
The only way of posting a letter is to go inside the building to use the box in the foyer or another on the first floor. But these are only accessible during opening hours.
Now embarrassed Royal Mail officials have been forced to apply for planning permission to site an old-fashioned pillar box outside the elegant glass frontage.
