is the headline on the Front of the Sunday Times as the papers devoted many problems to the shootings of this week
TONY BLAIR is to announce urgent measures to break up teenage gangs amid the continuing wave of gun violence in British cities.
As another man was shot dead in London yesterday and three others were injured in two shooting incidents in Manchester, the prime minister called an urgent summit and ordered a review of gun laws, promising to root out youths who are terrorising housing estates.
Downing Street announced an immediate review of legislation relating to the possession and use of firearms and pledged to rush through new powers for the police.
A minimum five-year jail sentence for the possession of firearms, which at present applies to those aged 21 and over, will soon be imposed on over18s.
No 10 also announced an emergency meeting of ministers, police and community leaders to discuss how to respond to the gang killings.

New killing as scale of gun crisis is revealed
new wave of shootings, including one murder, was being investigated by detectives this weekend as it was revealed that specialist firearms officers are being deployed on London's streets hundreds of times a week in an attempt to curb the violence.
One man was killed in east London yesterday while another three were injured in two separate shootings in Manchester. Revealed: Britain's 12-year-old alcoholics
Children as young as 12 are being diagnosed as alcoholics amid growing concerns about binge-drinking in Britain, an investigation by The Independent on Sunday reveals today.
Record numbers of pre-teens and teenagers now require hospital treatment for drink-related disorders, the exclusive nationwide survey shows.
The findings prove there is a hidden epidemic of child alcoholism, resulting in thousands of youngsters being treated in hospital each year for alcohol poisoning, liver disease and drink-related psychiatric illnesses.
Doctors warn that conditions such as cirrhosis of the liver are now starting to appear in people who are still in their teens, prompting calls for special detoxification clinics to be set up around the country for teenage drinkers.

Blair's wealth gap: voters want City bonus curb a story that it featured prominently last year
Tony Blair's Britain is revealed as a divided country of "haves" and "have nots", beset by levels of greed and selfishness that Labour once claimed to be the trademark of the Thatcher years.
In an ICM poll for The Sunday Telegraph, 73 per cent of voters said City bonuses had become "excessive and something should be done about them", while 69 per cent believe the gap between the highest earners and average earners is now too large.
Asked whether the British people have become more or less selfish since Labour came to power in May 1997, some 43 per cent said the country had become more selfish, while 47 per cent said things were the same. Only four per cent believe Britain has become a less selfish place.

Women will be paid to donate eggs for science
The Human Fertility and Embryology Authority (HFEA), the government regulator of this highly sensitive area, is expected to approve the policy when it meets on Wednesday. At present, clinics are not allowed to accept eggs donated for scientific research unless they are a byproduct of either IVF treatment or
sterilisation. Campaigners for change say that this has led to a chronic shortage of eggs for scientific use.

Britney Spears is not far away from the headlines even the heavies getting in on the act this morning, the Observer reporting
Months of wild partying. And now Britney shears in public
In a bizarre twist in the erratic career of America's former princess of pop, Britney Spears has sparked speculation she may be suffering some kind of breakdown after she shaved off her own hair in a shop window.
Spears turned up at a Los Angeles hairdressing salon late on Friday evening, but when staff apparently refused her request for such a dramatic cut, she picked up the electric clippers herself and, as onlookers gawped through the glass, sliced off her long brown hair.

Fears for sad Britney Spears says the Express
Shocked fans saw her walk into a hair studio in Los Angeles, pick up an electric razor and shear off her long locks. Before the startling haircut, they had seen her sit weeping for 10 minutes in the back of her chauffeured black SUV. Afterwards, she was driven to the nearby Body and Soul tattoo parlour where artist Max Gott spent half an hour etching a pair of red and pink lips on her waist. Owner Derrick Snell, who opened his doors after hours on Friday at 7pm especially for Britney, declared: “We couldn’t believe our eyes. She seemed to be in another world and looked bizarre with her sheared head.”

According to the Telegraph,
Tory plan to overturn hunt ban
David Cameron plans to repeal the hunting ban if the Conservatives win the next general election, in a simple one-line Bill.
The strategy is revealed in a private letter to MPs which instructs them to reassure "our friends in the hunting world" that a Tory government would overturn the Hunting Act as a matter of urgency.
It comes as hunts across England and Wales marked the second anniversary of the ban coming into force by turning out in large numbers to go trail hunting this weekend.
The letter, from David Maclean, the former Tory chief whip, who says he is writing on behalf of Mr Cameron, says: "Over the last few months colleagues have been speculating on the different ways we could honour our commitment.

The Times reports from the Middle East
Last chance summit for fading Condi
WHEN Condoleezza Rice attends the summit between Palestinian and Israeli leaders in Jerusalem tomorrow it will not only be the fate of the Middle East peace process at stake, but also the reputation of the US secretary of state.
Donald Trump, the property magnate famous for the televi-sion catchphrase “You’re fired”, spelt out the problem with Rice’s diplomacy in characteristically blunt language recently: “She goes on a plane, she gets off a plane, she waves, she goes there to meet some dictator . . . They talk, she leaves, she waves, the plane takes off. Nothing happens. It’s a joke . . . Nothing ever happens.”
The Jerusalem summit is already off to a difficult start. Although Saudi Arabia brokered a deal in Mecca last week for a new Palestinian government of national unity that includes members of the fundamentalist Hamas and the nationalist Fatah, the rival factions are still squabbling over control of the security forces and the distribution of cabinet posts.

Rice jets to Baghdad as anti-war backlash grows on Capitol Hill
Says the Observer
As Rice was travelling to Iraq behind heavy security, the White House was suffering a defeat in the House of Representatives, where Democrats forced through a tough measure condemning a recent 'surge' in US troops. However, a Senate debate on the same issue was voted down yesterday after Democrats failed to win enough Republican support in an emergency session.

Date set for Brit troops to come home
PM Tony Blair is to announce he is cutting our contingent in the war-torn country by almost HALF.
At the moment there are just over 7,000 Brit troops based in Southern Iraq. That number will be cut to 4,000.
A withdrawal had not been expected until November, but in a statement to Parliament in the next three weeks Mr Blair will say:
AT least four battalions which had been due to go to Iraq in May — replacing troops returning home — will stay here.
BRITAIN will hand control of Basra province to the Iraqi army and police within months.
THE remainder of British forces in Iraq will withdraw to their permanent base at Basra International Airport.

Finally the Independent reports
Mystery of the Himalayas solved
The mystery of why the Himalaya mountains and the Tibetan plateau are the highest in the world has at last been answered, with the discovery of a gigantic chunk of rock slowly sinking towards the centre of the Earth.
When the massive slab - up to eight times the area of the UK and as thick as a dozen Everests on top of each other - dropped off, the lighter crust above it rebounded upwards like a cork released under water, geophysicists say. This "sudden uplift" would have raised the Himalayas by as much as 2km (1.24 miles) to their present height.
If not for the surge, Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay might have found themselves reaching the "roof of the world" by conquering Aconcagua (6,962m) in Argentina while Everest languished at a mere 6,848m above sea level, 2,000m below its actual peak.
