The Sunday Times reports the growing controversy over the cash for honours investigation following Fridays arrest of a Downing Street aid.

Yard fury at No 10 over smears

OPEN warfare has broken out between Downing Street and the police over attempts by allies of Tony Blair to “coerce” detectives in the cash for honours inquiry.

Angered by senior Labour politicians who criticised the arrest of a key No 10 aide on Friday, police leaders and senior former officers yesterday openly accused the government of playing “Big Brother” politics by improperly interfering in a police investigation.

Honours probe police hacked No10 computers reports the Telegraph

Police used computer experts to obtain confidential material, and are also believed to have approached Number 10's internet suppliers to gain access to government email records.
Scotland Yard became suspicious that potentially vital information was being withheld after it twice asked Downing Street for all emails, letters and other material relating to the system of awarding peerages. Concerns grew among officers that
there had been a cover-up.

The Independent reports

The pressure on the Prime Minister intensified after the police let it be known that they are furious that a string of politicians, led by David Blunkett, the former home secretary, have criticised the police over the arrest of Ms Turner on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.
Len Duvall, the Labour politician who chairs the Metropolitan Police Authority, said in a thinly veiled attack that it was "inadvisable" for people to comment on their lines of inquiry, and warned them not to try to "manipulate or pressurise" officers. He added: "No one in this country is above the law."

Hilary Clinton's announcement that she is running for the Democratic nomination fro President is well covered.

I'm in - and in to win, says Hillary headlines the Observer

Hillary Clinton launched the first official steps towards her historic bid to become America's first woman President yesterday with the bold announcement: 'I'm in - and I'm in to win.'
Senator Clinton's move to form a committee to raise money for a presidential bid finally put her into the race for the Democratic party's 2008 nomination, pitting her against Barack Obama, John Edwards and a host of other candidates.
It was the latest twist in Clinton's already remarkable career that is now set to embark on its most ambitious journey. She has gone from First Lady to Bill Clinton to being a high-profile New York Senator and is now set to bid to become the most powerful person on the planet.

The Telegraph reports that

Mrs Clinton, 59, revealed her plans just five days after her main rival for the Democratic nomination, Sen Barack Obama, took the same step – as the most open presidential race in more than half a century entered a frenzied new phase, still almost two years before the election in November next year. She had been widely expected to enter the contest, but is thought to have brought forward her announcement to counter the publicity surrounding Mr Obama, 45, who is hoping to be the first black president.

It though leads on a developing story this morning,

Reid wants to split the Home Office in two

The controversial proposal follows the Home Secretary's "fundamental review" of his overstretched, crisis-hit empire, which he has condemned as "not fit for purpose".
A new "national security department" would oversee the fight against terrorism and other "public protection" functions such as the police. It is also likely to have responsibility for the immigration service. A separate Continental-style "ministry of justice" would oversee prisons and the justice system, possibly poaching powers that the Home Office used to hold but which, under Labour, have been transferred to the Department for Constitutional Affairs.

Revealed: march of the new casinos

The full scale of Britain's gambling revolution can be revealed today after The Observer obtained secret minutes revealing that the equivalent of 10 super-casinos will be built in England and Wales in the next few years.
A week before the announcement of where Britain's first Las Vegas-style super-casino will be located, a detailed list obtained from the Gambling Commission reveals vast expansion plans which are a contrast with government assurances that the number would be very limited. Opposition parties accused ministers of a 'con trick'.

And continues to reveal

The document from the Gambling Commission reveals that in the last two years alone it has approved 90 new casinos. The total amount of new gaming floor space approved since April 2005 totals nearly 600,000 square feet - equal to an extra 10 Las Vegas super-casinos.
The commission is considering applications for a further 57. Industry insiders predict there will soon be more than 200 casinos in Britain, double the number when Tony Blair came to power.

Kelly in new storm over gay law

Ruth Kelly is trying to water down new anti-discrimination laws to let Catholic adoption agencies turn away gay couples.
Backed by Tony Blair, the embattled Communities secretary is at the centre of a full-scale cabinet row over the new gay rights laws.
She was forced to postpone a formal letter setting out the exemption late last week because of opposition by her senior colleagues, The Independent on Sunday has learnt.
But Ms Kelly, a devout Catholic and member of the Opus Dei sect, remains determined to include a loophole for her church in the Equality Act 2006 which comes into force this April. A spokeswoman for Ms Kelly, who has overall responsibility for equality, said the minister wanted to "protect the pool of prospective parents" and would be trying to find a "pragmatic way forward" this week.

And staying with the government,The Times reveals

Tony's policy map for Gordon

Which according to the paper, says that the Pm,

is seeking to force Gordon Brown to sign up to a far-reaching agenda of new Labour reforms before he leaves office, according to a leaked letter to the prime minister.
The overhaul, designed to be implemented over the next 10 years, covers all aspects of government, including crime, security, immigration and the running of schools and hospitals.
It calls for a greater role for the private sector — a suggestion that will irritate Brown — and for cutting Whitehall staff by 50%, potentially meaning 350,000 civil servants could be sacked.

And now to Big Brother which dominates the Tabloids this morning again,

The People headlines

JADE: THE STINK OF HYPOCRISY

JADE Goody is today exposed as a hypocrite who uses 14p-an-hour workers in India to make her perfume - while she earned £744 an hour hurling racial abuse at housemate Shilpa Shetty.
Jade 25 - evicted from Celebrity Big Brother after subjecting Bollywood beauty Shilpa to a string of insults - has pocketed more than £1 million from sales of her Shh... scent.
But it would take the workers who produce the perfume in India nearly FOUR WEEKS o earn enough to buy a single £20 bottle

The Mirror reports

EXCLUSIVE: MY JADE IS RACIST & A BULLY

JADE Goody's grandmother wept last night as she confessed: "My granddaughter IS a racist bully".
Jacqueline Goody rounded on the motormouth Big Brother star and said she was ashamed of the way Jade had abused Bollywood beauty Shilpa Shetty.
Jacqueline, 69, mother of Jade's mixed-race dad Andrew, said: "What she said to Shilpa was unforgivable. It was racist and full of hate. I am so upset that Jade's been so ignorant, because her father was mixed-race and her grandfather was black.
"They are both dead, but if they were alive they would be so disappointed and ashamed.

The News of the World has an exclusive interview with Jade which includes,

In the most emotional and important interview of Jade's life—which was punctuated by frequent tearful outbursts— we asked:
ARE YOU A RACIST?
No, I'm not a racist, but I accept I made racist comments. I don't see people for the colour that they are, or where they come from.
I'm mixed race myself and I speak to everyone of every colour, background and nationality. I don't care about where people are from.
AT THE HEIGHT OF THE TENSION SHILPA TOLD CLEO SHE THOUGHT YOU WERE RACIST. WAS SHE THE VICTIM OF RACISM AND BULLYING?
She was a victim of bullying and racism, yes. I can understand why she would have said that.

The Mail has a differing twist,

Our horror over Shilpa's Big Brother ordeal, by parents

Even at a matronly 57, Sunanda Shetty is an obvious source of 31-year-old Shilpa's radiant smile and flashing dark eyes. All charm and grace, the former model apologises for having kept us waiting - her measured sentences and softly accented voice so similar to her daughter's tones that set off an explosive rage in Jade.
But behind the smile is what can only be described as sheer grit. One senses that Mrs Shetty is a matriarch who always gets what she wants. And what she wants now is to see the demise of Celebrity Big Brother. She has written a formal letter of complaint.
"It is an ugly and vulgar show, which has run its course,' she tells me, in her first full newspaper interview. "It must end with this one. There is already enough conflict in the world. We don't need to create it artificially and call it entertainment.
"This has been one of the most unpleasant events I have encountered on television. I don't mind some friction, it is inevitable when you create this kind of environment. But the show is deeply flawed. They should have provided firm guidelines from the start to ensure a level of respect for other people's culture.
"Instead they turned it into a combat zone, which left my child exposed and vulnerable. Nobody warned us this could happen."

The Independent reports

Look back in Ongar: Anger in her home town forces Jade Goody into hiding

So, yesterday, the 25-year-old former dental nurse reportedly went to a safe house far from the baying public. The Perfume Shop has cleared her best-selling scent, Shh ..., from its shelves. Carphone Warehouse has pulled out of its £3m sponsorship of Big Brother. Hertsmere Council has threatened to evict the show from the studios. Ofcom, the television regulator, has received 40,000 complaints about the show - more than any other in history.

The Times meanwhile reports

C4 bosses to consider axeing Big Brother

Several members of the board — chaired by Luke Johnson, the former head of Pizza Express — now believe last week’s allegations of racism by Jade Goody towards Shilpa Shetty have so discredited the show that it is doing immense harm to the channel and damaging race relations.
“Does this sort of programme still hold up today?” asked one senior board member about Big Brother this weekend. “Britain’s race relations are still pretty fragile, so we must be very careful.”
The current row adds to concerns about the show among the channel’s board members. They point to denigrating comments made on Big Brother last year towards Pete Bennett, a sufferer of Tourette syndrome. They have also questioned whether, without “manufactured rows”, the programme would be able to sustain itself.

Finally The News of the World also reveals

DANIELLE LLOYD will come out of the Celebrity Big Brother house unaware she has been DUMPED by horrified boyfriend Teddy Sheringham, the News of the World can reveal.
Away form the BB controversy, the Express leads with

THE famous Red Arrows face the axe in the latest round of defence cuts demanded by Gordon Brown.Ministers confirmed last night that, despite an earlier pledge to keep the elite RAF air display team, it has been included in a wide-ranging spending review.MPs warned the move would cause huge damage to the RAF, the aerospace industry and Britain’s image as a world power. Armed Forces Minister Adam Ingram has refused to give assurances about the future of the Red Arrows, saying only that the defence review would lead to cuts in “areas of lower priority”.

The News of the World reveals the 10 vital clues

I cannot shake your hand, sir. I'm a Muslim and you're a man
