I thought that I would look at the local press around the country this afternoon.
Where better to start than in Manchester where the evening news has an update on a story that made national headlines earlier this year.

Jessie CCTV prompts 'significant' calls

CHILLING images of the killers believed to have gunned down Manchester schoolboy Jessie James have been revealed.
The grainy black and white CCTV pictures caught the two hooded, bike-riding figures minutes before they arrived at the Moss Side park where the 15-year-old was shot.

And perhaps this is the gun capital of the country as the second lead is

Gun appeal after double death probe

A CORONER today appealed for the public's help to discover how a college student gained access to a gun which he used to shoot dead his 15-year-old ex-girlfriend and then himself.
Jilted Joshua Thompson, 18, shot Kally Gilligan at her home in Salford, Greater Manchester, with a sawn-off shotgun before taking his own life.

The press and journal in Aberdeen headlines

VIGILANTE PENSIONERS TAKE ON HOLIDAY THUGS

Fearless pensioners from the north-east launched a vigilante attack on bag-snatching thieves who pounced as they sat in their car during a Spanish sunshine holiday.

It is one of those stories that you can't help but read

Unwilling to let the young thugs get the better of them, the pair returned to the scene - in an area of town police compared to the notorious Bronx area of New York - to try to identify them the following day. However, their attackers spotted them and a violent brawl broke out that pitted the pensioners and their arthritic friend against a 6ft, fit and healthy local man in his 20s.Mr Gordon landed a "couple of punches" on the assailant and delivered a kick between his legs, while his wife tried to hang on to her bag. They were able to identify the ruffian to Spanish police and an investigation is under way.

The Western Mail in south Wales reports that

Farm siege ends

An overnight siege at a Welsh farmhouse concluded today with the arrest of two men, police said.
Almost 24 hours after officers closed off roads around a smallholding near Tregaron, West Wales, the situation was resolved peacefully.
It also came after Radio Ceredigion broadcast a message from two men in the farmhouse, giving their version of events.
A confrontation was sparked yesterday when council workers tried to remove a disputed fence bordering the property.
There were reports of loud bangs or shots being fired and a vehicle set on fire as the row escalated.

The Liverpool echo headlines with

Boy, 6, in school porn fury

A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy was unfairly accused of downloading porn on his school computer after a graphic image appeared on screen during a lesson.
Ryan Oliver's outraged parents were questioned by social workers as an investigation was launched.

The Glasgow evening times reports that

PIRATE DVDs and CDs worth more than £300,000 were seized in a pre-Christmas raid at Paddy's Market in Glasgow.
Police swooped on the lane of ramshackle stalls and found hundreds of poor-quality copies of the latest blockbuster movies and chart CDs, as well as copying equipment.

The Evening Standard in London reports on the weather

Motorists found themselves caught in jams on the roads today as the great Christmas getaway descended into chaos.
Worst-hit was the busy M40 where a fatal, multiple pile-up - caused by dense fog - resulted in gridlock.
In accident number one a car went out of control on the motorway towards the end of the morning rush.
Before emergency services managed to clear the scene three lorries crashed into the wreckage.
One person - believed to be one of the truck drivers - was certified dead at the scene, near Banbury. One lane of the M40 southbound was closed to traffic, creating long, slowmoving tailbacks for motorists striking out for the holidays.

Traffic is also the lead in the Birmingham evening mail

Hero dad killed in M40 rescue attempt

A "GOOD Samaritan" and a boy of 14 - both from Birmingham - were killed in an horrific freak motorway tragedy.
Dad-of-two Gary Roberts was knocked down as he stopped to help schoolboy Raymond Lovelace.
The teenager, of All Saints Road, Hockley, was fatally injured seconds earlier when a pick-up truck he was travelling in overturned.

Finally another resue story on the front of the Newcastle Evening Chronicle.

Hero risked life in river

Rescue hero Adrian Tavener told last night how he risked his life by diving into ice cold water to save a woman who fell from the Tyne Bridge.
The 31-year-old was taking a morning stroll on the Newcastle Quayside with a friend yesterday when he saw the 37-year-old woman plunge 60 feet from the bridge into the water below.
As she lay face-down, unconscious, in the sub-zero river, Adrian stripped off and leapt into the river to swim to her rescue.
