One of those days when the breaking news on the Internet editions of the paper overtakes the overnight headlines.America goes to the polls and delivers a damning verdict on the Presidency of George Bush
At 1.30 pm Uk time this is the situation
The Guardian announces that
Democrats take control of House
“President George Bush's job is a lot tougher this morning, after the Democrats won control of the House of Representatives, breaking the conservative monopoly of power in Washington and clearing the way for congressional investigations into the conduct of the Iraq war.”
The Times
Democrats triumph on historic night that leaves Bush reeling
“The Republicans have been thrown out of power on Capitol Hill after mid-term elections yesterday which left the Democrats firmly in control of the House of Representatives and, probably, the Senate”
The balance of power in the Senate hangs on the State of Virginia
Where according to the Indie
Senate in balance as Bush battered
The battle for Senate seats in Virginia and Montana was going down to the last votes counted today, and Democrats needed to win both to shape a majority and complete their grip on legislative power. A potential Virginia recount could further lengthen the suspense.
It blames the results firmly in the lap of the incumbent President
“The election yesterday was a repudiation of Republican scandal, with a succession of tainted politicians losing seats as their leaders lost power, and a stinging referendum on the course of the Iraq war and the nation's direction.”
The battle for the Senate now comes down to two states and as reported in the Guardian
“The future of the Senate still hangs in the balance, with two states yet to be decided. The Montana count is tight but leaning towards the Democrats, while in Virginia lawyers were preparing to fight over the outcome. The Democratic challenger, Jim Webb, holds a lead of a few thousand out of 2.3m votes cast. If the vote is close enough, with less than a 0.5% margin, Virginia state law gives the loser the option of calling for a recount once the first count has been finalised by November 27.”
The Indie’s attention turns to the presidential election in two years
“US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton set off for a New York state-wide victory tour today after romping to re-election - a political milestone that bolstered her status as the Democratic front-runner for the 2008 presidential nomination.
Clinton easily dispensed with her Republican challenger, former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer, winning nearly 67 per cent of the vote in a lopsided contest. She planned to fly from Manhattan to stops elsewhere in the state today where she was certain to face new questions about her presidential campaign plans.
Addressing a boisterous rally last night in Manhattan, Clinton brushed aside questions about 2008 and instead championed Democratic election wins in New York and across the country. “

Most senior al-Qaida terrorist yet captured in Britain gets 40 years for plotting carnage
2Mr Justice Butterfield said Barot was a "determined and dedicated terrorist". "This was no noble cause," the judge said. "Your plans were to bring indiscriminate carnage, bloodshed and butchery, first in Washington, New York and Newark, and thereafter the UK on a colossal and unprecedented scale.
"Your intention was not simply to cause damage, panic and fear. Your intention was to murder, but it went further. It was designed to strike at the very heart of democracy and the security of the state, and if successful, would have affected thousands personally, millions indirectly and ultimately the whole nation of the US and the UK."
