Four soldiers die in boat bomb as Blair prepares shift on Iraq
“Four British servicemen were killed in a bomb attack on their patrol boat in Basra yesterday, intensifying pressure on the government to set a clear timetable for the withdrawal of troops from Iraq.
Three of their colleagues were also severely injured by the improvised explosive device, as they patrolled the Shatt Al Arab waterway, a vital supply line bordering Iran. The attack took place just over an hour before the Queen led a two-minute silence on Remembrance Sunday in honour of Britain's war dead.”
The Telegraph tells us that
“Two of the dead were from 45 Commando Royal Marines and the others were from the Royal Signals and the Intelligence Corps, the Ministry of Defence said.
The injured men were taken to a nearby military field hospital where they underwent surgery. The condition of one was said to have “improved significantly”, although the other two remain very seriously injured.”
The Front cover of the Independent meanwhile has a single poppy on a black background with the words
“As Tony Blair lays a wreath at the cenotaph four British soldiers lay down their lives in a futile wretched war”

Bomb kills 35 as Iraq presses US to withdraw
"A DOUBLE suicide bombing outside a Baghdad police base killed 35 people yesterday as a Shia MP revealed that the Iraqi Government had started to put pressure on United States forces to leave the capital.
“The Government wants US troops to withdraw from Baghdad,” said Haidar al-Abadi, who is one of the Prime Minister’s inner circle.
Mr al-Abadi said that US officials had in preliminary discussions been reluctant to leave the city because they were concerned that it would open the way for Shia militants to attack the Baghdad Sunni minority
The Independent continues its reporting on the fall out of the Us elections with the Republican
John McCain setting his stall out telling that he:
“has moved closer to a White House run, saying he was setting up an exploratory committee, and that he would take a final decision early in 2007.
"I am going to sit down with my family over the holidays and make that decision," the four-term senator, who unsuccessfully ran against George Bush in 2000, told NBC's Meet the Press yesterday.”
The Guardian reports that
“More than 160 prison officers were involved in inflicting and covering up a regime of torture which saw savage beatings, death threats and sexual assault inflicted on inmates”
As one election ends another kicks off this week in France where the Socialists start the process of choosing their candidate for next years presidential elections
The Times reports that
“SÉGOLÈNE ROYAL urged French Socialists yesterday to endorse her as the party’s presidential candidate in a party-wide vote this week because she was their only hope of capturing the Elysée.
Ms Royal, 53, spent the weekend on the defensive after opinion polls showed Dominique Strauss-Kahn, 57, a former Finance Minister, catching up in the race for the support of the 217,000 party members. If no candidate wins a majority this Thursday, there will be a run-off a week later.”
The Telegraph reports on the challenge from the right as Le Pen once again enters the campaign trail.
“Mr Le Pen is convinced that his fifth presidential campaign since 1974 – and probably his last – will end in the ultimate electoral earthquake in April's elections: "My goal is not the second round, it's the third: the presidency," he said as he prepared the formal launch of his presidential campaign in Le Bourget, on the outskirts of Paris, yesterday.”
Amongst the Red Tops the Sun reports that:
Jailbird's pub is The Lag's Head
“A JAILBIRD on day release has been secretly running his own PUB.
Bungling prison officials let out knife thug Mark Barry, 46, after he told them he had a job as driver.
They failed to even realise he was often returning sozzled — after working behind the bar of a bistro pub he launched.
Barry was only rumbled at the weekend when a fellow con grassed on him.
Shocked chiefs immediately launched a probe — and switched Barry from soft Hewell Grange prison in Redditch, Worcs, to a tough closed jail.”
The Mirror reports on the continued rehabilitation of Richard Hammond:
EXCLUSIVE: HAMMOND: I FEEL LIKE ME AGAIN
HAMSTER BACK BEHIND THE WHEEL
"ECSTATIC Richard Hammond got back behind the wheel of a car yesterday for the first time since his horror crash and said: "I will remember this day for the rest of my life".
He took his wife Mindy for a spin in his Morgan sports car after being given the go-ahead by doctors to drive again.
It was less than two months since the Mirror columnist and Top Gear presenter suffered a serious brain injury in the 288mph jet car smash as he filmed a stunt for the show.
